The telephone wiring within your home or business may be leading to a bad connection. Do you hear crackling or have dropouts when on a call?  Your cabling may be to blame, we are specialists at telephone cabling repair and can provide solutions to improve your connection. Poor wiring and junction boxes can be the cause of many telephone, broadband & Wi-Fi issues. A common problem is when cables have been run under carpets, particularly across door-ways, over time the cable becomes compressed resulting in the insulation breaking down causing your phone line to short.

Dampness getting into a telephone socket or junction box can cause the connections to corrode resulting either in noise on the line or no service at all. Another issue is when white internal grade cable has been used externally, over a period of time the sun’s ultraviolet rays cause the insulation to break down allowing rain into the cable resulting in corrosion and shorting. Our local engineers will fault find and look to see if any cabling, junction boxes or sockets may need an upgrade or replacement. We have skilled and experienced engineers who can provide you with a fully qualified and personal service to improve and fix your telephone connection needs. The service is available to customers of all service providers including BT, Sky, TalkTalk and Virgin Media.

Broadband services in the UK provided through the Openreach network from a wide choice of providers typically fall into two main products: ADSL & VDSL/FTTC (Fibre To The Cabinet). Openreach also provide a much faster FTTP (Fibre To The Premises) service which is being gradually rolled in many areas. Much faster speeds are also available from Virgin Media if Cable TV is available in your street.

ADSL & ADSL2 Standard Broadband

VDSL2 / Fibre To The Cabinet Broadband

ADSL & ADSL2 are the standard broadband offered by Openreach. The maximum download speed from ADSL is 8 Mbps and the maximum download speed from ADSL2 is 24 Mbps. In practice these speeds are rarely achievable as it depends on how far your home or business is from the local telephone exchange that serves your premises.

For ADSL2 the download speed reduces to 20 Mbps at a distance of 1.5km, 12 Mbps at 2.5km and 4 Mbps at 4km. Note that these approximate figures are based on the total length of the cable route from the exchange, not as the crow flies.

VDSL2 otherwise known as Fibre To The Cabinet or Superfast Broadband typically provides download speeds of a maximum of 80 Mbps and upload speeds of up to 20 Mbps. In the same way as ADSL the VDSL service is affected by distance except it is the distance from the fibre street cabinet that serves your premises rather than the exchange. For VDSL2 the download speed reduces to approximately 60 Mbps at a distance of 500m, 30 Mbps at 1km and 18 Mbps at 2km. Note that these approximate figures are based on the total length of the cable route from the cabinet, not as the crow flies. Some cheaper FTTC connections are capped at lower maximum speeds such as 40 Mbps download and 2 Mbps upload.

If you are unsure what options are available you can check on the BT Wholesale DSL Checker site to see what services and speeds you are likely to get by inputting your telephone number. If you are receiving much lower speeds than you should expect then give us a call as there are often a number of measures that we can carry out for you to improve your broadband service.
